How to use Doodle’s features to get back on track

With reports suggesting that children may be up to three months behind in their learning, you may be feeling a little anxious that your child has fallen behind in school.

Designed to be used for just 10 minutes a day and built by our team of educational specialists, Doodle’s work programmes are specifically designed to help children catch up and top up their knowledge.

Take a look at how you can use Doodle’s fantastic features to support your child’s learning journey, help them to get back on track and, most importantly, rebuild their confidence in maths and English.

1. Complete an ‘x-a-day’ to fill learning gaps and consolidate knowledge

Doodle creates every child a personalised work programme tailored to their strengths and weaknesses. It presents this learning to children through short sets of exercises called x-a-day.

To get started, simply log in to Doodle on a desktop or tablet device and select the x-a-day button. Doodle will then ask your child a series of questions tailored to their ability.

Aim to complete at least one x-a-day each day. You could also encourage your child to play an educational game or two to vary their learning!

Top Doodle tip: Premium Doodle users can complete as many x-a-day exercises a day as they’d like. This is especially useful when using Doodle to catch up or when using Doodle as a home learning solution!

2. Use Doodle’s help features to work through tricky questions

Doodle’s clever algorithm, Proxima™, ensures the questions it asks are at just the right level for each child, with around 20% of exercises being on the challenging side. This allows every child to experience success while ensuring continual progression through the curriculum.

If they’re finding a question tricky, encourage your child to use the ‘help’ or ‘hint’ buttons found on the screen when answering a question. These features will explain key concepts in an accessible, step-by-step way, enabling your child to work through exercises independently.

If your child is really stuck, ask them to use the ‘tricky questions’ feature. This will save the question so they can come back to it later with yourself or a teacher.

3. Use the Parent Dashboard to practise tricky areas

Parent Dashboard or free DoodleConnect app to identify the topics that they’re finding challenging.

Log in to the Parent Dashboard, hover over Analyse and select Gaps. You’ll then see a list of key areas in the curriculum and a traffic light system representing their level of understanding in each topic.

Once you’ve found the topics your child is finding challenging, find time to explain and practise them with your child. Our online curriculum-aligned topic guides are a great way to help with this, with step-by-step explanations and interactive examples to try!

Top Doodle tip: Premium users can automatically set extra work in more challenging areas or any topic you’d like your child to revise. Simply click on the plus icon next to the topic area!

4. Set extra work in areas your child is learning in school

While Doodle automatically creates every child a unique work programme, Premium users can also set additional work in topics they’ve been covering at school. This is a great way to refresh their knowledge so they don’t experience learning loss and forget what they already know.

To do this, log in to the Parent Dashboard, hover over Extras and select Assign. You can then search for a topic and add it into your children’s work programme by pressing the down arrow and clicking Add

All of Doodle’s questions are aligned to the English and Welsh national curriculums for EYFS, KS1 and KS2, so you can rest assured that your child will always be covering relevant content that is supporting their school learning.

5. Create a goal to motivate your child

Doodle automatically creates every child a unique target, but did you know you can also set your own goal for them?

Goals can be specific targets, such as working towards meeting the year’s national curriculum expectations in an area of the curriculum, and are a great way to encourage daily Doodling!

To create a goal, simply log in to the Parent Dashboard and hover over Analyse. Select Analyse targets, press Edit goal and choose an end date by which the target should be achieved. Suggested goals will then appear; select Save for the target to appear in your child’s app.

6. Set your very own Doodle Challenge

Print off one of our Challenge sheets to get started. We recommend our popular 30-Day Challenge as a great way to promote daily Doodling during the school term!

Reward your child with a sticker when they have completed their exercises for the day. When they complete their Challenge, you could present them with one of our fantastic free printable certificates.
