Use the ÷ (Divide) Symbol

We can use the division symbol (÷) for dividing.

÷ means ‘divide’ which is the opposite of multiplication. It asks us to find how many of one number can fit into another.

For example, 10÷5=? is asking us how many fives fit into ten.

If you know your times tables, they can help with dividing.

Example 1 => 8 shared by 2 is 4
8 divided by 2 is 4
8 ÷ 2 = 4

This is because 2 goes into 8 four times.

Example 2 => 12 shared by 2 is 6
12 divided by 2 is 6
We can divide 12 by 2 using 12 ÷ 2 = 6.

Example 3 => 15 ÷ 5 = ?
We know that 3 lots of 5 is 15.
So 15 ÷ 5 = 3.
The answer is 3!

Example 4 => 22 ÷ 2 = ?
There are 2 lots of 11 in 22.
So 22 ÷ 2 = 11.
